The World of Aela's Promise
A Broken World
This is not a story about heroes who chose to be here. It is a story about people who had no choice — and what they do with the life they were given.
The Awakening
You open your eyes to a grey sky. The ground beneath you is cold stone — unfamiliar stone, from an unfamiliar place. You do not remember your name. You do not remember where you came from, or how you got here. There is only silence, and the faint sound of wind through ruined towers.
Others are waking around you. Some are confused, some frightened, a few already walking the perimeter of this place as though searching for an exit they know they won't find. None of you have answers. All of you share the same hollow feeling: something was there before, and now it is gone.
Then the voice comes. Soft. Warm. Impossibly calm.
“You are safe now. I brought you here because you were needed — because you are the only ones who can help. I am Aela. And this world is dying.”
The Dying World
The world was once called Venustas. It had cities, forests, coastlines, and people who had lived there for generations. Some still do — in hiding, in ruins, behind walls they pray will hold through one more night.
The Corruption came without warning. A presence so vast and so wrong that standing near it breaks something in the mind — an aura that crawls into your thoughts, turns courage into paralysis, turns soldiers into prey. The people of Venustas call it the Blight. Their strongest warriors could not face it. Their kings fell. Their gods went silent.
At the centre of the Corruption is the Sovereign — the demon lord. It does not lead an army so much as it generates one. Creatures pour from the darkened places of the world, shaped from its will, and they do not stop. Kill one and another takes its place. Burn a nest and a new one opens somewhere else. Venustas has been bleeding for years.
The people of this world cannot stand against the Sovereign. Its aura crushes them before a blade can be raised. But you — the ones Aela brought here — feel nothing. The aura that breaks them washes over you like cold air. No one knows why. Aela says it is because you are “from outside,” untethered from the world's fabric in a way that makes you immune. She says it with certainty. She says it like a gift.
The Goddess
Aela presents herself as a protector — a divine presence who has watched Venustas suffer and finally acted, reaching into other worlds to pull the only people capable of making a difference. She is patient with questions. She is generous with guidance. She never raises her voice.
But the old texts — the ones you find in abandoned libraries and crumbling shrines — tell a stranger story. Aela has been here a long time. Longer than the Corruption. The scholars who studied her wrote of cycles: a darkness that rises, heroes who come from elsewhere to fight it, a period of relative peace, and then the darkness again. Always the darkness again.
The texts offer no single culprit for the realm's despair. They record only a quieter truth, written in hesitant ink: that a deity flourishes on the weight of desperate prayers—and Venustas has never lacked for souls with nowhere else to turn.
“Whether she saved us or placed us on a board she was already playing — perhaps it does not matter. We are here. The monsters are real. The people need help. What we do with that truth is the only choice we actually have.”

The Promise
Aela made each of you a promise when she brought you here. She has not said it aloud — not to any of you, not in words. But it is felt, like a contract signed in a language you can no longer read. Somewhere in the part of you that is missing, you know she offered something. A return home. A restored memory. A life worth living, even if not the one you had.
Whether she intends to keep it is a question you may spend a very long time answering.
For now, Venustas is burning. The Sovereign's creatures are in the fields. The survivors need food, walls, and people willing to stand in the dark. The answers about Aela, about your past, about what this world really is — those will come, piece by piece, if you survive long enough to find them.
You are an outsider in a world that was broken before you arrived. You did not choose this. But you are here, and you are standing, and the creatures of the Blight have never met anything quite like you.
That is, perhaps, the only promise that matters.
